After more than 100 days and 140 missed votes, Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr. returned to work on June 30th, and shared with the American people that he was hospitalized as a result of struggles with depression.
"Depression is a very real illness that millions struggle with, and we all strive to live in a society that does not stigmatize or shame those who have been impacted. I know I speak for everyone at the Sussex County Democratic Committee when I say with the utmost sincerity that we wish the Congressman well as he seeks further treatment.
While treatable, depression has no cure. Apparently there is also no cure for Tom Kean's hypocrisy.
An estimated 47.8 million Americans have struggled with depression. For the vast majority of Americans struggling with their mental health, taking four months away from work is an impossibility, and would certainly mean financial ruin. Unlike the majority of Americans, Tom Kean Jr. could get the help he needed because the American people pay his salary and cover his benefits.
Nearly 14% of Sussex County residents were recipients of Medicaid before Tom Kean Jr.'s deciding vote on the One Big Beautiful Bill, which left 44,000 of his constituents without coverage, a bill which, ironically enough, instituted work requirements for those on Medicaid: 80 hours per month.
It is our sincere hope now that Tom Kean Jr. has experienced the benefits of exceptional healthcare and paid sick leave, he will become an advocate during his final days in Congress for constituents to benefit from the same level of quality care. Healthcare for mental health is vital, and everyone deserves the dignity of accessing the resources necessary for complete wellness."
