Andover Township is facing a massive lawsuit from National Land Developers LLC and it is the direct, predictable result of local elected officials operating in an irresponsible and reckless manner for years. This lawsuit didn't happen because the Republican-led Township Committee suddenly decided to protect their constituents; it happened because their years of poor planning and open-door policies invited predatory developers into the township’s backyard in the first place. The Andover Township Committee only scrambled to pass a last-minute ban when residents fiercely pushed back and forced their hand. Now, local taxpayers are about to be left cleaning up the legal repercussions of their incompetence. It is completely shameful.
This is not just a failure of local governing process. It is also a battle for the very survival of our environment. Data centers are ecological disasters. They devour our green space, strain our power grids with astronomical energy demands, and deplete our local water tables. New Jersey Republicans consistently champion these corporate, resource-draining eyesores under the guise of "development.” Locally, the Sussex GOP and County Commissioners continue to aggressively lobby for these projects wherever land is available, allegedly using threats of political retaliation to force local government compliance. When you ask residents of Sussex County what they cherish most about our area, the answers always include our idyllic environment. We refuse to let corporate interests pave over our natural landscape for private profit. We are saying enough is enough!
The Sussex County Democratic Committee proudly stood with our Andover neighbors of all political affiliations on this issue earlier this year, and we will keep standing with them as this court battle unfolds. True leadership means making careful, transparent, and proactive decisions from day one to protect our municipalities, not making audacious decisions that ultimately leave residents to deal with the fallout of a disastrous lawsuit. We deserve leaders who actually value conservation over corporate handouts, and we won't stop fighting until we have them.
