SCDC Demands Resignation of Sussex GOP Chair Joe LaBarbera Following Arrest on Gun Charges

The Sussex County Democratic Committee expresses alarm and deep outrage following the September 13, 2026 arrest of Sussex County Republican Committee Chairman Joseph LaBarbera. According to public reports, LaBarbera was taken into custody on four serious charges, including:

• Second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose-firearm.

• Third-degree endangering-abuse/neglect of a child by non-caretaker.

• Fourth-degree aggravated assault with firearm.

• Fourth-degree gun permit carrier unjustified display of gun.

We are calling for Joseph LaBarbera’s immediate and permanent resignation from his leadership position.

It is deeply disturbing that anyone would allegedly engage in this threatening and violent behavior, but it is particularly egregious with claims a child was involved, and that it is coming from a high-profile political leader whose role directly influences elected officials and candidates seeking to lead our local municipalities, county, and state. Leadership requires trust, accountability, and a commitment to public safety. These are qualities that are entirely incompatible with these alleged actions.

Regrettably, this alleged situation fits into a broader pattern within the leadership of the Sussex County Republican Party. LaBarbera’s immediate predecessor, former Sussex County GOP Chairman Jerry Scanlan faced criminal charges for driving while intoxicated following an arrest in Sparta, leading to his eventual resignation.

The citizens of Sussex County deserve better than a leadership structure marred by repeated legal scandals and reckless, criminal behavior from those at the helm. Our communities expect and deserve leaders who respect the law and uphold basic standards of public safety and integrity. Taking a temporary leave of absence is not enough. The people of Sussex County, as well as the candidates and officials guided by the GOP leadership, deserve an immediate resignation and complete accountability.

The Sussex County Democratic Committee stands with our community in demanding higher standards, integrity, and responsible leadership from all political figures in our county.

Sussex GOP: Do better.
