GOP condones curbs on voting rights; Garrett led the way

In 2013 United States Supreme Court dealt a blow to voting rights, especially the rights of minority voters in red states.

Scott GarretttAnd that made Sussex County’s Congressman Scott Garrett’s day.  You would be hard pressed to find a more dogged opponent of minority voter rights than Scott Garrett.  In 2006, he was the only Congressman North of the Mason-Dixon Line to vote against reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Since then, Republicans in Congress have followed in Garrett’s footsteps.  Attempts to abate the problems caused by the 2013 Supreme Court decision are going nowhere.  The GOP refuses to consider any proposed fix.

And, the attack continues.  This New York Times article reviews the moves to undermine voter rights over the past 50 years.

The Times article elicited a letter to the editor from a prominent beneficiary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
