New Jersey Republican leaders know they need a top tier candidate to challenge freshman congressman Josh Gottheimer for his fifth congressional district seat in 2018. One name keeps popping up: Wantage resident and Fox Business News anchor Lou Dobbs.
We reported earlier that the NRCC is targeting Gottheimer’s seat in 2018 as one that they will pour resources into.
The 2018 CD5 race effectively began the day after the 2016 election. The Observer reports that the NRCC knows that Gottheimer is a disciplined and organized congressman who appeals to a broad spectrum of voters.
Although the GOP believes the seat could be retaken in 2018, it will take a special candidate to do it. Lou Dobbs brings with him instant recognition through is work at Fox and CNN, as well as a million Twitter followers. It would be a battle that would garner national attention.
