Comment: The Time is Now to Make a Difference

The deadline for filing a petition to appear on the ballot for most town council seats is Monday, April third. That’s only about two weeks away, but there remains sufficient time to collect the necessary signatures for your petition.

candle-450a.jpgThere are many positions up for election across the county. A number of you have stepped up to serve your community, but many more unchallenged seats remain. As Democrats, we have been encouraged by the energy and interest directed toward our political process, but that has not reached the level needed to fill the “D” column on the ballot. I cannot help but lament the inherent irony of taking a stand against Republican policies when, as Democrats, we don’t step up to challenge them on the ballot. What political pressure would any Republican legislator feel when he or she runs unopposed?

The SCDC presented a workshop on running for office to explain the process and assuage any apprehension you may have. We have shared notes from that meeting, but are always hear to answer your questions ([email protected]).

Please consider serving your community and running for a seat on your town council. To quote one of my favorite song writers:

If the future’s looking dark, we’re the ones who have to shine.
If there’s no one in control, we’re the ones who draw the line.
Though we live in trying times, we’re the ones who have to try.
Though we know that time has wings, we’re the ones who have to fly.
