Demonstrators seek universal checks; Garrett punts

On Friday, July 1, a group of Sussex County citizens demonstrated in front of Congressman Scott Garrett’s Newton office asking that he support a bill that would require universal background checks to prevent dangerous persons from obtaining weapons like those used in Newtown, Connecticut, and Orlando, Florida.

AR-307039961.jpgGarrett responded that he supports banning dangerous people from buying guns. However, he avoided stating his views about the bill currently pending before the House Judiciary Committee. That measure would mandate background checks for all persons seeking to buy guns. He appears to back the idea of keeping guns out of dangerous hands, but does not support the means to implement it.
